Upton Bass Rosin - 01 Maple Original
Upton Bass Rosin - 01 Maple Original
Upton Bass Rosin is a new formulation developed and tested by Upton Bass to provide the best feel, response and tone of any double bass bow rosin. A bespoke rosin blended by Gary Upton and made in our Mystic, Connecticut workshop.
01 Maple is a medium-soft rosin, providing lasting grip and a flexible feel (Maple just refers to the color).
Purpose: Provides a good grip, suitable for general playing conditions.
Texture: Medium soft and sticky
Usage: Acts as a base coat (typically 3-6 swipes). Can be used on its own without any additional rosin.
Gary says, “I truly believe I’ve formulated the best bass rosin out there. If you like Pop’s, Carlsson, Nyman, Kolstein or Wiedoeft you will love my formulation. No chemical fillers and a great reliable sound and touch.”
Blake Hinson, NY Philarmonic: “This rosin is excellent. Now you have to make it forever or something better! Great pop, no warmup time, not grainy. It’s great.”
Rosin is another one of those pieces of bass player kit that deserves some extra examination. And the bassists who truly depend on it for their sound can be obsessive, even blending their own. Even if your bowing is limited to grabbing for arco under the final chord, you understand the balance between glide and grab that is so important, and any non-sounds or squeals will ruin the moment.
Professional bows need to deliver that touch on demand in cold halls and warm bandshells. A symphony chair may need to swell in a beautiful passage after a hundred measures of rest - their performance absolutely depends on that blend of glide and grab.
